Shimmer is Sunsetting
TL;DR:
Shimmer L1 and ShimmerEVM are sunsetting. Shimmer has served its purpose as an early playground that helped prove and expedite IOTA’s technology through L1's launch and later ShimmerEVM's DeFi ecosystem. Bridging ends August 29, 2026. Full sunset: September 30, 2026.
Shimmer was built as a place to test, break, and prove new technology before it was ready for prime time. That job is done, and we're announcing the sunset of Shimmer L1 and ShimmerEVM.
Bridging assets from Shimmer will no longer be possible after August 29, 2026.
What This Means, and When
Shimmer was launched as an early staging ground, a network where new technology could be tested and proven at speed, without the constraints of a live production environment. It served that role well, supporting the launch of Stardust and IOTA EVM before they went live on IOTA.
That role has now been fulfilled. Shimmer is no longer needed, and it will no longer be maintained.
Here's the timeline:
- Saturday, August 29, 2026: LayerZero external liquidity bridge for ShimmerEVM is shut down. After this date, there is no viable way to bridge assets in or out of Shimmer.
- Wednesday, September 30, 2026: Shimmer and ShimmerEVM will stop block production and officially sunset. The block explorer will fade out alongside the network. The Shimmer website will be discontinued.
We encourage anyone with assets on Shimmer or ShimmerEVM to take action well ahead of August 29, 2026, to ensure a smooth transition.
Thank you to everyone who built on, tested, and pushed Shimmer forward. What you proved here made a lasting difference.
